What it is
Layer by Layer
Mica is a natural mineral that grows in layers, so a block of it splits into thin, clear, flexible sheets.
Muscovite, the light-coloured mica, does not carry electricity, stands high heat, and resists water and most chemicals. Industry has relied on it for more than a century, and India, one of the oldest sources of mica in the world, still supplies factories everywhere. Coast Origin supplies it in four forms, sorted and graded to each buyer's order.

Electrical insulation
Sheets and splittings insulate motors, heaters and transformers: mica does not carry electricity and stands high heat.
Paints & coatings
Ground mica makes a paint film tougher and helps it resist weather and water.
Plastics & rubber
As a filler, it adds stiffness and keeps moulded parts from warping.
Cosmetics
Fine, pure mica gives powders and pearl pigments their soft shimmer.
Welding rods
Mica powder is part of the coating on welding electrodes.
Drilling & building
Flakes seal cracks in oil-well drilling; powder goes into plaster, joint compound and roofing.
